Don't set Goals, Make a system
Don’t Set Goals, Make a system
![]() |
Goals are very important in our life. It allows us to plan how we want to move through life. Without goals, you may be a lack focus and direction. you need to set goals If you want to be successful in life if you want to achieve anything in your life "Make a system" because goals are directly related to result whether the system is related to a process that gives you success easily. So, don’t set only goals, make a system as well.
Most people make a list of goals but they don’t follow it, they get confused. They have a lack of focus they don’t know how to and where to start or sometimes they get stuck in between. They cannot achieve their goals because they don’t make a system to follow.
Example: You want a healthy and fit body (this is a goal). But You need to eat a healthy diet and daily exercise (this is the system) which gives you a healthy and fit body easily. Similarly, you want to achieve 98% in the exam (this is a goal) but daily reading and understanding the subject properly (is the system).
Goals are best to set your life’s direction but if you want to progress in life Make a System and follow it. Winners and losers have the same goals but the ones who follow the system who continuously make small improvements get the goals easily.
Your belief is your identity:
If you want to follow the system wisely change your habits by identity-based but people want to change their habits by outcome-based that’s why they get fail to change anything in them and in their life.
Outcome-based: Suppose a guy who is trying to quit smoking if you offer him a cigarette, will reject it by saying “no thanks I'm trying to quit smoking”.
Identity-based: Suppose a guy who is trying to quit smoking if you offer him a cigarette, he will reject it by saying “no thanks I’m not a smoker”. This statement is so small but its effects are big on you. People want to improve but they don’t want to change their identity that’s why they get to fail.
Actions:
Our actions are generated by our set of beliefs. Repeating actions becomes our identity. Every single action is a vote for whom we want to become in life.
Example:
1) If you write something that is the plus point in your writer identity,
2) When you meet people and speak confidently this is the plus point in your public speaker identity.
3) When you influence others, this is the plus point in your leader identity.
So, decide whom you want to be in life? And make a small improvement.
Habit formation: Habits are generated by these four steps Cue, Craving, Response, and Reward.
CUE (it reminds you of the reward): if you remove the cue from the habit, the habit won't even start. So, Make your cue visible.
CRAVING (makes you curious to attain your reward): Make your craving attractive.
RESPONSE (our response gives us a reward): Make your response easy.
REWARD (we want to achieve reward because it gives us satisfaction or we will learn something new from it): Make your reward satisfying.
For example, You want to build a book reading habit.
1) Cue(visible): you need to place your books where you see them easily.
2) Craving(attractive): you need to mark where you have stopped reading last time and you also need to make a catchy point about what you are learning from that book.
3) Response(easy): place your books near you, where you get them quickly and start reading.
4) Reward(satisfying): choose the right book to read. You will make your satisfactory level high by reading the right books.
Daily 1% improvement:
Most people think they have a lack of motivation that’s why they couldn’t start their work. But in reality, they don’t have clarity (they don’t know what, when, and how to start?). Try to set your clear goal and make a clear system. Whatever your goal is make a 1% improvement daily and keep following your system it will help you to achieve your goal easily. In the short term, a daily 1% improvement gives you nothing but in the long term, it will give you effective results like the compound effect.
"Motivation is overrated, the environment matters the most"
I have read all these points from the “Atomic Habit” book by James Clear. This is the great book I have ever read. It teaches you about habit building and I have related this book with goals. I hope you would like my combination (Goals + System + Habits). If it is useful for you let me know by comment below.
